The narrative of this book feels a little clumsy sometimes. The story itself, centered around the liberation of the residents of some nondescript planetoid ruled by “Citizen Prime Desira,” appears to be yet another attempt to forcibly insert sex into the story, turning it into the locker room version of the beloved character. Zarkov, whose ego was always a source of humor, is completely off the rails this time around, having been transformed by the writers into some sort sex-crazed technological savant. The original strip and many later adaptations always showed some level of romantic tension between Flash and Dale, for example, but at the beginning of this book, it is strongly suggested that they may or may not have become sexually involved, the running joke being that Dale will not give a very hung-over Flash Gordon a straight answer about what happened. This book relies heavily on sexual humor, exaggerating what once subtly risqué elements that at one time were part of the strip’s subtext. Zarkov, combats the forces of Ming the Merciless, who is obsessed with universal domination. The fearless, cocky ace pilot and space adventurer Flash Gordon, with the help of his friends Dale Arden and Dr. Written by Ben Acker and illustrated by Ben Blacker and Lee Ferguson, this new Flash Gordon four-part miniseries is full of nods to the past while decidedly pointing at the future.Īll the classic elements of the original comic strip are there. This latest iteration of Alex Raymond’s science fiction comic strip from the 1930s is part of Dynamite’s revisiting of King Features Syndicate’s most prominent heroes, along with The Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, Jungle Jim, and Prince Valiant. But now I’m back, and I’ll be taking a look at Dynamite Comics’ latest offering in the nostalgia department with King: Flash Gordon #1. Thanks to a couple of uncooperative wisdom teeth and some heavy duty drugs that had doing my best Sinead O’Connor impersonation, I’ve been out of commission for the past few days.
